Near the bridge is a commemoration of Leith born John Hunter. The son of a Leith shipmaster, he was the second in command to Arthur Philip on the first fleet bound for New South Wales, Australia. He was appointed 2nd Governor of New South Wales between 1794-1800, before returning to the UK.
