Two Scottish league teams play out of the capital. Hearts football club play in the Scottish premier division, while Hibernian Football Club play in the Scottish first division having been relegated from the premier division last season.

The Scottish league season runs between the months of July to May the following year. Each team in the league plays each other approximately four times, two at home and two away, points are awarded for a win (3pts) or a draw (1 point). The team with the most points at the end of the season is the outright league winner. There are also two cup competitions during the season that work on a knock out basis. The Scottish Cup Final is the curtain closer to the Scottish season.

Hibernian Football club were formed in 1875, there name being the Roman for Ireland, where the founders of the club originated from. The club has a rich history being one of the first clubs to enter European competition in 1955. They were relegated last season but have already won the first division title and will return to the premier next season. MAP

Given the clubs stated desire to improve on the quality of their Easter Road Stadium, this is of prime importance to them.

For an update on their progress visit the Hibernian F.C. web site.

Heart of Midlothian are Edinburgh's other professional football team. They are just as steeped in Edinburgh's history as Hibernian. The club took its name from the founders favourite 1870's dance hall. Previous to this the name 'Heart of Midlothian' was associated with a tolbooth prison where death row prisoners would await execution in the grassmarket. MAP

The current team however has no such worries. Hearts won the Scottish Cup in 98 and expect better things this year after coming close to relegation in last years league.

The team have been playing in the same Gorgie area since 1881, originaly a field on the edge of the city it has been the home of Tynecastle Park ever since.
