A new train booking system hits the web as from today. Developed by Virgin who run the west coast line in the UK, the service offers timetables and booking for all UK operated trains.

Rail Services

Edinburgh is served by Intercity 125 diesel trains from London’s King Cross via York & Newcastle. The fastest train, ‘The Flying Scotsman’ covers the journey of three hundred and ninety three miles to Waverley in 4 hours 35 minutes. MAP

Rail services crossing the border from or to the south are run by the Great North East Railway.

From Edinburgh main routes exist to all major Scottish cities including Glasgow, Dundee, Aberdeen, and Inverness. All Scottish services are run by Scotrail.

The London service carries on to Dundee, Aberdeen and Inverness (approx. 10 services per weekday). Extra services run to Dundee and terminate at Aberdeen making the service hourly on week days. All trains cross the impressive Forth Rail Bridge along the way.

Glasgow is served by fast Scotrail express travelling the forty six and a quarter mile journey in 48 minutes. Services run weekdays on the hour and half hour.

Varies Discount types exist on Scotrail Trains.

  • On longer journeys Savers and Super savers can be used at off-peak times (Saturday to Thursday) to reduce rail fare. Return tickets can be used for up to a month from outward journey date.
  • APEX tickets can save a further 40% of the cost of a Saver. These must be booked at least 48 hours in advance and will include seat booking. Only available on selected journeys of approx. a hundred and twenty five miles plus.
  • SUPERAPEX tickets give the most reduction possible. These must be booked at least 14 days in advance and are only available on selected journeys.
